Désolé pour le retard mais je n'avais plus internet depuis 3-4 jours, donc bon, c'est pas hyper pratique. Apparament ici, ils ne connaissent pas le principe de l'illimité et chaque dépassement s'accompagne d'un bon petit pécule. J'avais dépassé mon quota de 5Go par mois, donc j'étais bloqué, mais ça va très vite, vous savez (essayez Skype vous verrez ^^).
Je vais donc vous raconter un peu notre soirée au Mitai. Je vous ai copié le texte "officiel" que j'accompagnerai de quelques commentaires.
Déjà ce qui est pratique c'est qu'il y a un minibus qui fait le tours des auberges de jeunesse et viennent vous chercher et vous ramener le soir après les spectacle. Très pratique pour ceux qui n'ont pas de voitures (comme nous) ou ceux qui veulent boire un petit coup. Enfin bon je trouvais l'idée très bonne. Donc après avoir fait le tour des auberges de jeunesse, on était une petite cinquantaine, je dirais, à avoir assisté au spectacle.
Le spectacle était rodé, ça se voyait, et on remarquait que les touristes défilaient ici. Mais qu'importent, le spectacle était de qualité et les gens très sympas, on avait pas l'impression d'être des vaches à lait et on est rentré très content de la soirée et on a pas regretté les 40€ qu'on a mis dedans.

Welcome to Mitai

On a commencé à tous s'asseoir dans un grand chapiteau autour des tables. On était des groupes de 8 environ. Un des membres du staff nous a donc expliqué, avec un accent maori-neozealandais incompréhensible, le déroulement de la soirée. Il a d'abord fait un petit tour des différentes nationalités présentes dans la salle, et ben digurez-vous qu'on venait tous de 14 pays différents, avec entres autres: Nouvelle Zélande, USA, UK, France, Portugal, Brésil, Inde, Chine, et d'autres que j'ai oublié depuis.. Il y a d'ailleurs une petite anecdote : le mec demande s'il n'a oublié personne, si tous le monde a bien dit d'où il venait. Et là, un petit garçon de 5 ans lève le bras, malgré son père qui lui dit "non, non baisse-le". On lui demande donc d'où il vient, il répond " de Darwin" (Une ville un peu plus loin en Nouvelle-Zélande), on lui a donc gentillement dit que c'est vrai que Darwin c'est très bien, mais que c'est pas vraiment un pays ^^. On a ensuite dû élire un chef qui serait notre interlocuteur avec le chef de la tribu Mitai.

Hangi Unveilling
Cooked in traditional styme your hangi meals includes chicken, lamb, stuffing, potatoes and kumaras (sweet potatoes) cooked in the hangi pit. See your meal being unveiled and say a karakia (prayer) prior to leaving.
On nous a montré comment étais cuisiné notre repas, le Hangi (qui est plutôt la manière de cuisiner que le repas en lui-même). On creuse un trou, on met des pierres chaudes dedans on place la viande et les légumes sur une grille et on recouvre le tout avec des couvertures mouillées. C'est donc cuit à la vapeur, à l'étouffée.

On est ensuite allé à côté dans la forêt. En marchant sur le chemin, on voyait des mecs en maori avec des torches qui marchaient un peu plus haut. Très pittoresque, un peu comme un film, en fait. On a attendu près de la rivière le Waka. J'ai plein les mecs sur le bateau, parce qu'il faisait pas chaud et ils étaient quasiment à poil. Leur manière de pagayer est aussi très spéciale, mais on avait déjà vu ça dans un film au musée. Une petite vidéo.
Cultural Perfomance
Pohiri (welcome ceremony) begins with a challenge to the Visitors' chief. A challenger with fierce gestures lays a peace token to be uplifted by the visitors' chief. Picking up the token means peace and not picking up means war. In the past this ceremny determined whether the visitors were peaceful of hostile. In today's society it is always performed with peaceful intentions.

Là, on ne peut pas nier que les femmes qui chantent ont de la voix. Très impressionnant.
Haka
A dance of strengh and vigor not only to welcome visitors but also to wan them of our strengh and readuness should they decide to attacj our village.
Enfin un haka, on a beau être des spectateurs, on fait les pas les fiers. C'est très impressionnant. On comprend mieux pourquoi l'équipe de France de rugby se chiait dessus quand les All Blacks ont fait leur haka ^^. Le but était de se préparer à la guerre bien entendu, se donner du courage. Le fait de tirer la langue dans le Haka veut dire qu'on a hâte de bouffer l'autre. Les maori étant cannibales à la base. Une petite vidéo.
Whai-korero (speeches)
Speeches of welcome are folloes by song in order to protect the speaker form spiritual harm or tapu which may be directed at him by the visitors. This followed by a speech from the visiting chief.
Hongi: pressing the nose means friendship and sharing the breath of life. This signifies the end of the welcome ceremony.
Explanation: time to relax, the serious side is over, lets lighten up and have some fun.
On passe du maori en langue anglaise. Le tout sur ton de la rigolade "Même si on a faim, on ne va pas vous manger ce soir, on a plein de McDonald et de KFC maintenant". Ils expliquent aussi que ce n'est qu'un spectacle, qu'ils sont comme nous dans la vie de tous les jours, mais qu'ils ne veulent pas renier leur héritage.
Origins: Maori originate from Polynesian particularly from the Tahitian Islands. We are related to the people of Tahiti, Cook, Hawaii, Marquesses, Easter Islands, Samoa, Tonga and many more. The language is similar but the culture is different. Maori have inhabited New Zealand for over 2000 years. In New Zealand Maori speak the same language but make up over 70 main tribal groups.
Dance Implements Introduction
Poi ball: used by men to strengthen the wrist in order to use the heavy short club without damaging the wrist. Stones were placed inside flax or swamp reed to make poi ball heavier.
Les Poi sont des sortes de bollas courtes et creuses. Le but est de les faire claquer sur les avant-bras. C'est très chouette. Une petite vidéo.
Stick games : for fun, fitness and eye to hand coordination
Un jeu d'échange de petit batons qu'on se lance et qu'on rattrape. Ca avait l'air super dur ^^ notamment quand il sont 4 et qu'ils croisent les lancers. D'ailleurs ça a pas raté, ils ont pas réussi à un moment ^^ .
Poi dance : story of two lovers and the troubles they face to be together. The woman is a Princess and the man is a low rank from another tribe, a marriage forbidden by woman's parents.
Weapons display : basically Maori had two main weapons, short or long clubs of various shape. This includes various exercices for fitness and agility.
Long Poi : depicts the flight of the White Heron. This is the most difficult of the poi simultaneously manoeuvring 4 long pois.
Haka (war dance) : translated means “breath of fire” or “words of fire”. At home, it is used as exercise for fun or for entertaiment. The Pukana is the protruding of the tongue, an act of defiance. In the past it is to said to the enemy “ my mouth waters and I lick my lips for soon I will taste your flesh”.
Moko explanation (tatoo) : on the face of the men are 4 birds: the bat , the parrot, the owl and kiwi. The women wear the owl on the chin. The story explaining the moki has two messages (a) look after your woman (b) how the Maori obtained the moko. A husband follows his wife into the underworld after she suffers a beaing of him and runs off. He finds her, restores the marriage and becomes a devoted husband never hitting her again. The tribe follows this example and through time this story becomes law, “treat all women well”. Maori had no means of written language so all history is passd down through story telling, song and carvings.
The four birds the man gave to a chief of the underworld in exchange for the moko is the bat, found on the forehead, the parrot beaks on the nose the owl on the chin and the kiwi on both sides of the face. The bat means wisdom, the parrot skill in speech making, the owl protection, the kiwi protection of earth mother. The design on the men's legs represents the ocean vawes which means power and speed. The design also placed on the bow of the canoe. The spiral on the backside represents mother earth and energy patterns of mother nature found in the wind and waters. Tornadoes and waters spouts.

Guided bush walk
Fairy Springs (Te Puna tapu o Tuhoe): the chief Tuhoe lives in this area. The rainbow when seen over the spring was a good omen meaning all is well. The Fairy people of Mont Ngongotaha visited the sping often thus giving this spring its name. The spring releases over 24 million litre of pure water every day.

Glow worms: Mitai is home to Rotorua's only glow worms in their natural setting. The glow worms are a maggot which attracs insects using its luminescent tail. The insects are trapped in a cotton like web hanging from the sides of the bank and covered with the paralysing saliva of the glow worm.
